Stones River Pony Club (SRPC) is one of the Middle Tennessee branches of the United States Pony Club, with members in and around Murfreesboro. We are one of several clubs in the Midsouth region, which covers all of Tennessee and Kentucky, and parts of Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, West Virginia, and northern Alabama.
Pony Club, the leading junior equestrian organization in the world, began in England in 1929. The Pony Club name refers to the age of the members, not the size of the animal. Children may join at a young age (usually no younger than 6) and be active members until the end of the year in which they turn 25.
Pony Club encourages young people to ride and enjoy all kinds of sports connected with horses. It provides instruction in the English style of riding and in the proper care of horses. It promotes the highest ideals of sportsmanship, citizenship, and loyalty, thus teaching strength of character and self-discipline.
Pony Club ratings start with D-1, D-2, and D-3; C-1, 2, 3; B; H-A; and A. To reach the "A" rating represents outstanding achievement and dedication.
Instructors stress stable management at all levels to ensure horses are comfortable and safe in their stalls, well fed, watered, and groomed, with feet kept properly shod. Basic principles of first aid for horses and humans, and the care and correct use of saddlery are also taught.
A District Commissioner (DC) directs each club. At the club level, the DC is helped out by the active participation of parents and people interested in horses, graduate members, and junior members. All sorts of jobs are available to parents: building jumps, score keeping, refreshments at events, judging at events, or helping to administer the club as one of its elected officers. The only prerequisite for most of these jobs is the desire to help.
